How to Prepare for an Interview- The Series

Part Two- What to Say!

We understand that it's incredibly nerve racking to go on an interview. Whether a first timer, or a seasoned vet, interviewing with a new company is sure to cause some level of anxiety. Here is an inside look into some of the questions asked by NYSL Promotions' CEO, Joseph Mannino, along with tips and tricks on how to nail that preliminary meeting!

1. "What was your last job like?"
In this question, Joseph is looking for experience. He wants to know what you've done in the past that will prove to him that you will be an asset to our firm. Talk about relevant work that you've done in the past, whether professionally or personally, that will allow you to succeed within our company. Ultimate goal: Prove Your Worth!

2. "Why did you leave, or why are you looking to leave, your last job?"
Here, Joseph is looking to see if you will fit well within our office environment. Here at NYSL, we are a fast-paced, energetic group of individuals. This type of environment is not for everybody! We're not looking to waste our time, or yours, by pursuing other steps of the interview process if you won't be a great fit from the start. Whether you left your last position on a good note or bad, be upfront and honest from the start. Highlight positive things that came, or will come, from your departure of the company.

3. "First thing that comes to mind when I mention marketing?"
Joseph wants to know how much information you know about our company. Marketing can mean a NUMBER of different things, depending on who you ask. Have you checked out our website and other social media sites before coming to the interview? What do you know about how WE market our clients here at NYSL? If you include your knowledge about our company in your preliminary conversation with Joe, you'll separate yourself from the rest of the competition.

4. "Would you feel comfortable teaching and training others?"
Ultimately, Joseph is looking for his next manager. We are doing incredible things for our current clients and they are always asking us to expand our territory. We recently promoted Hernan Arbaiza and Kerlande Philippe from our North Jersey office into North and South Boston, respectively. Joseph wants to know if you would be able to teach and train others what you learned in the Entry Level position, to ultimately help the company expand even further. No matter what department you start off in at NYSL Promotions, we are always looking for people who are interested in growing with the company. The only way we can grow, is if you can help us teach and train new recruits.

5. "How do you define success?"
Be honest, but don't sound full of yourself!! Bring up other things that people have previously said about your greatest strong points and talents. Here, Joseph is looking to see if NYSL is going to be able to provide you with your definition of success. If, ultimately, your goals and our goals don't match up, we want to realize right off the bat whether a partnership is beneficial for both you and our company.

In conclusion, no matter what company you are interviewing with within your dream field, keep these five questions in mind. First impressions are everything! Sound confident, look sharp and be knowledgable about the company you are interviewing with.
